Dreamcast 77: Back on the Bandwagon Again

In by Rice Cube69 Comments

Welp, we had this thing done on Sunday night and then the Cubs went and blew up our plans, so we recorded again. Mind you it’s a good thing that they did the thing, but still, considering how most of us have actual jobs, this is as early as I could get it to you (dying laughing)

This time:

  • The Cubs clandestine recruitment of Craig Counsell
  • What this means for David Ross
  • What this means for the 2024 Cubs
  • Some old stuff about the World Series that just happened
  • Thoughts on the Gold Glove winners
  • Some goofs and easter eggs for your amusement

We’ll be back after the GM Meetings and the MLB award announcements for another episode before the Thanksgiving break, and hopefully by then we know more about how the Cubs intend to make Counsell’s first year really slap.

    Still thrilled

I agree with you guys on the podcast. I will root for Ross and want him to succeed, but with Counsell available I want Ross to succeed elsewhere. Preferably not in the National League.

Yeah I get the injuries but having leaned on the same three bullpen arms all through the summer really hurt down the stretch. The Diamondbacks won the NL and there’s no way you could convince me they were a better team than the Cubs this year.

    Rice Cube,

It’s insane. This is batshit bonkers. And while it is Nightengale, it’s not like he’s predicting the Cubs here, just a lot of GMs telling him they expect the Cubs to be aggressive. That seems to be more hopeful than the dreaded Bob non-White-Sox prediction.

    Rice Cube,

That thread talks about RSN revenue from cable subscribers who never actually watch games. But teams have to recognize there are a ton of baseball fans who waste money on cable/streaming packages solely so they can watch sports. It should be relatively easy to get that revenue back.

    Perkins,

It’s also a technical nightmare. It’s difficult enough with the Super Bowl, but 7 games in 9 days would be crazy. It also probably wouldn’t bring in much profit to the city.

    Listening to the podcast finally…

Nice job on the sound effects RC. Cracked me up.

Still amazed how you can make this sound so much better as a pod than it does on the phone. Heavily editing me is definitely a benefit. (dying laughing).

    BVS,

Also, Adam’s point about Jed not over-pursuing was proven last year with the SS market. Were Bogaerts or Correa more valuable than Dansby? Were they $100M better?

The Cubs would have more $ to spend if Papa Ricketts quit wasting his money on politics.

Counsell’s sons are at UMs. Michigan and Minnesota. Apparently his favorite son is at Michigan since that’s who he moved closer to.

    berselius,

In my opinion, Benetti to Detroit is a bigger coup than Counsell to the Cubs. It’s bonkers.

And I saw a statement from the Sox saying Len is committed to radio and they’re searching for a replacement elsewhere. I can’t imagine remaining a fan of that org.

    andcounting,

Considering that Detroit is a market that’s what…20% the size of Chicago?

Good for the Tigers fans though. Since Ernie Harwell died, they’ve had to endure some pretty awful announcing. Frank Beckman was terrible on both radio and TV. He was just one grievance after another. I’ve never thought Jim Price was that interesting either. He drags down Dan Dickerson, who seems pretty good the few times I’ve heard him.

Wait…what did he do wrong? Does Jerry even watch TV?

Rice Cube: Does Jerry even watch TV?

Yes but it’s on an old console TV that he bought used as a student in 1963. The paper speaker in the back rotted away years ago after sitting in sun too long by the picture window in the living room. It’s hanging together by the three reinforced seams.

    BVS,

The dude hired in-the-gutter TLR for two years. He forfeited his right to criticize anyone about anything. The White Sox are the Exxon Valdez of sports franchises.

You can do today’s IG with all ex cubs but there is only one combination that works for the international Cy Young/HOF slots.

I didn’t think about this until I entered Fergie in the wrong slot. So I could only use 8 cubs.

I don’t have the link, but I saw a note from Bruce Levine that Counsell talked to Ross on the phone for about 45 minutes. Good on both of them for the gesture and the patience to sit through that awkwardness.

    Perkins,

Fergie works for international Cy Young or HOF, but you have to use him for HOF because he’s the only Cub who works there. Willie Hernandez works for exCub international Cy Young.
