Dreamcast 94: Mission – Improbable!

In by Rice Cube126 Comments

With the Cubs’ odds shrinking by the day, we jabronis got together to commiserate and cling to the last threads of hope before mathematical elimination. Stuff we talked about:

  • The standings and the huge climb ahead if the Cubs are to make a stretch run;
  • Improvements and great performances from the big league club and the minor leaguers;
  • Random MLB stuff, including those goofy new pitching rules being brainstormed;
  • Baseball is hard!

    berselius,

    I was meaning to talk about this and got distracted, (dying laughing). It really is hilarious how frequently we see something we’ve never seen before happen in a game. Intentionally walking a guy for an out is just the best.

    Rice Cube,

    It could also be they need to talk to you about an investigation into something else. I got laid off a couple months back and it was my boss who called an impromptu meeting to which HR was invited without my prior knowledge.

    Either way it sucks and HR is the worst. Best of luck.

    I did get a new AM radio with the money I probably shouldn’t spend right now so that Zaidman inning was super painful to listen to (dying laughing)

    berselius:
    M^{-1}

    OK explain the math to me, see this is a squiggly bracket so it’s not the regular M^(-1) which would just be 1/M, and it’s not a matrix, so does the squiggly bracket just flip the entire number, which doesn’t actually make sense from a math standpoint? I didn’t major in math though (dying laughing)

    Rice Cube,

    TLDR, it’s what you would write for M inverse in math markup language.

    Longer tedious explanation – in LaTeX, which is the main ‘language’ used for writing mathematical expressions, curly braces are used to group things, as the usual parentheses typically appear all over the place in math expressions. I didn’t specify if M is a scalar or matrix but either way this would be an inverse – if M were a scalar than M * M^{-1} = M * (1/M) = 1, so still an inverse. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

    I will have to look into free recording software for teleconferencing again, I don’t even know if anyone uses Skype anymore but that’s what I used to use…anyone know if the free version of Zoom allows you to record?

    Rice Cube,

    I did see that Riverside fm does a free version but I don’t know if it saves stuff on the “cloud” or allows me to download an mp3 to edit in Audacity like I usually do. The other option I saw is Mumble/Murmur, which would require everyone else to also figure out and we’d have to coordinate servers and crap. I’ll check my Podbean to see if they can allow a desktop recording app so I don’t have to just record off my phone (dying laughing)

    I can’t remember the top of the league being this crowded while the bottom of the league was so narrowly defined.

    andcounting,

    I say “Little League” only to point out that for the umpteenth time this year the Cubs have misplayed a ball that a decent Little League team would routinely make.

    berselius,

    It really depends on if Wicks is ready to come back since he’s still in rehab starts of sorts, also Kilian is being stretched out. I imagine if ATL and/or NYM win again tonight (as well as the Giants for that matter) they might be one step closer to just packing it in even if you don’t say that out loud.

    Ethan Roberts always looks like he’s being asked to do something entirely beneath him, which he finds ironically hilarious.

    Rice Cube,

    Is there a reason we’re not supposed to be glad he’s on the team? Maybe framing isn’t great, but he’s a decent hitter with a laser for an arm.

    andcounting,

    I think it depends on if you think A) Miguel Amaya really has turned a corner and B) Bethancourt is going to be this version going forward, otherwise you kind of have to upgrade and catcher is one of the obvious spots, and they’re not getting rid of Amaya.

    Rice Cube,

    (dying laughing)

    Yeah, I don’t know how they expect to upgrade at this position if this past month is any indication of who these guys are moving forward.
