  5. So the advantage of the signing bonus according to spotrac.com is that the player gets the signing bonus up front but the cost of the signing bonus is spread across every year of the contract. So Soto’s getting a huge Payday (~$125M) for this upcoming year, but the Mets’ luxury tax is still only $51M this year. Soto’s payday is more than the entire team of the A’s or the Rays or probably the Pirates and a few other teams are going to get.

  9. A note of cold water for Gage Workman.

    The Tigers let him go Rule 5, while keeping Zach McKinstrey.

    Hopefully he turns it into refreshing ice water on a hot summer day

  10. Keeping Cody Bellinger.

    Hopefully if I post this, then the situation will resolve itself.

    Given Bellinger, PCA, Busch, Suzuki, and Tucker and 5 starting locations (RF, LF, DH, 1B) and 6 games in a week, one against a lefty, that is 24 lineup starts.

    Tucker RF 5, DH 1/2
    Suzuki RF 1/2, DH 5
    Bellinger RF 1/2, DH 1/2, CF 2, 1B 2
    PCA (sits vs LHP) CF 4
    Busch 1B 4

    1/2 means 1 start every other week.
    Tucker and Suzuki get 1 day off every 2 weeks, plus scheduled days.
    Cody gets 1 day off each week
    PCA and Busch get 2 days off each week. That should naturally happen w PCA’s splits vs L many weeks anyway.

    Canario or Alcantara play left when Happ is resting or PH for PCA when he starts.

    Correct. MLBTR predicts 1/7MM for him. Right hander.

    Last year both had injuries.
    Luzardo: 66 IP 4.26 FIP 1.245 WHIP 8.2 H/9 1.2 HR/9 3.0 BB/9 7.8 K/9
    Turnbull: 54IP 3.85 1.049 6.1 1.0 3.3 9.6

    Turnbull has only pitched one full season, 2019, for the abysmal Tigers (2.5 WAR despite losing 17 games). Luzardo’s one full season was last year (4.0 WAR).

    You can credibly argue that Luzardo is a better option, he’s only 26 vs 31 for Turnbull and has 2 more years of arb, but I think it’s closer than one might think.

    Heck, get them both.

  24. Pretty decent salary dump, Cubs only had to send along $5m, save about $22m. The player in return seems super 🤷‍♂️
