Postgame Thread: Cubs 5, Braves 1, Cubs Bullpen -5

In Commentary And Analysis by berselius23 Comments

The Cubs got a good start from Carlos Villaneuva, who struck out 6 and gave up one run in 6.2 innings. Rizzo and Valbuena homered off of Braves starter Julio Teheran, and Nate Schierholtz was inches from adding one of his own. The Cubs were prepared to pour even more on, loading the bases in the top of the eighth with no outs but somehow managed to score zero runs. Then it was time for the bullpen. Kyuji Fujikawa''s fastball looked pretty good but the Braves hit it all over the park, bringing the score to 5-4. Marmol came out for the ninth throwing nothing but fastballs. He missed his location and B.J. Upton put it in the center field seats. Two batters later, his little brother ended the game.

Tomorrow, Shark takes on Tim Hudson.

5 runs in the 8th and 9th. (dying laughing) Glad I did something other than watch.

I only tuned in for the last inning or so.

In other news, Clayton Kershaw is now up to 16 scoreless innings for the year. He’s also batting .250/.400/1.000.

Small sample size, but Marmol looks clueless so far. Maybe its like when everyone freaked out about Derek Lee, then it turned out D Lee was just fine.

And then he sucked really hard for two years after that before retiring.

I can’t remember my point. Perhaps I punched it out of my skull; odds are good I wouldn’t remember if I did.

You…you remember that one time…where Carlos Marmol was pitching really bad, and then…and then Dale Sveum took him out of the game and the Cubs won? And then people started arguing over whether it was the proper move for Dale Sveum to take Carlos Marmol out of a high leverage situation?

    That was awesome.

And by “we” I mean Theo and me. I’m not secretly Jed Hoyer, I’m just a normal guy who tries to astrally project my thoughts and being into Theo’s mind. With some success, I like to think.

Yesterday, WaLi and I were discussing decorating the twins’ nursery a Cubs theme. Last night, we realized it would be too depressing every time we walked in there.

As I pointed out, it wasn’t about Marmol per se, it was about whether a few batters should change your mind on a pitcher. If pulling Marmol was the right decision, he shouldn’t have been out there in the first place.
