Continuing the Hammel discussion here.
Haren sucked. Hammel may not be great, but he’s still more than likely an above average starter. I’m way too lazy these days, but my guess is that he’d project out to be the Cubs 4th best reliever assuming a healthy Rondon and Strop. The only issue that I see as far as this decision is whether or not Hammel is going to be all pouty about not making the postseason rotation. If that’s the case then there’s a solid argument to keep him off the roster. My guess is that if Joe tells him what his options are, he’ll stop pouting and go out there to help the team win.

I’m trying to look at the wild card race as a glass half-full thing. It’s not a bummer that the Cards might sneak back in, it’s great that the Mets are gonna fall out. I think.

I don’t like Hammel pitching with the wind blowing out. That said, the Cubs should do some damage against Adleman.

There go Addy’s Gold Glove chances.

Bryant took two pitches in the zone and swung at two pitches out of the zone.

Some runs would be nice tonight, but I won’t hold my breath.

Rizzo the Rat,
Yeah, Bryant is all kinds of messed up at the plate these days. And Addy’s arm isn’t much better.
I hope they figure their shit out in the next couple weeks.

I know pitcher’s records don’t mean anything, but I’m glad Hammel isn’t getting a loss today.

The ball might as well be on a tee for the Cubs this inning

Perkins,
Apparently it’s 5 due to Cubs holding season series over Nats.

dmick89,
He sounded pretty gracious when asked about it after the game last night. Between the lines it sounds like Joe is thinking about him for the bullpen. If Joe goes with 7 relievers and Hammel and Montgomery are among them, then guys like Grimm, Edwards, Rob-Z, Cahill are going to have to compete for one spot.

Clayton Richard now has an ERA of 1.98 over 43.1 innings for the Padres.

That’s fine. Edwards probably has the inside track over the rest of those guys. I’d cross RobZ off the list immediately. He’s doesn’t nearly have the same kind of potential that the others might and if you’re taking Hammel and Montgomery (probably both locks in my opinion), you don’t need another long man.

dmick89,
Or another lefty, unless he bounces Travis Wood somehow. I don’t see that happening.

dmick89,
Edwards over Grimm and Cahill? Could be, will be interesting. I don’t think Cahill is only seen as a long man though. Grimm isn’t either, although he has not been very good in whatever role he has been put in.
SKQuote Reply
SK,
I could see Joe going with Cahill over Edwards. I’d be surprised if he took Grimm over Edwards at this point.
