The Cubs took care of business against a good Padres team, and embark on a fish-sandwich run of series with Marlins-Nationals-Marlins. Though I guess it’s only a fish sandwich if the fish is in the middle? I guess this is a Long John Silver’s style Double Down. The Marlins win projections are about in line with the Cubs at this point in the season, so we should see some relatively evenly matched games. The Marlins are coming off a series loss against the Barves, barely scraping out a win yesterday to avoid a four game sweep. Their offense as a whole has gotten off to a slow start, posting a .244/.301/.384 slash line and a 90 wrC+. Their pitching staff has posted a dead-on 4.50 ERA, so I guess expect a run every other inning. Or don’t. I can’t tell you what to do.
In addition to past…history…the Cubs have with the Marlins, I was surprised to find that old Cardinals pal Skip Schumacher is now their manager. Hopefully he left the voodoo back with the Provel in StL.

Who isn’t available?
Cyle is still rehabbing his shoulder injury, and probably won’t be back until May. He pitched for Iowa on Thursday and got knocked around, but was likely just working on his pitches rather than working on getting outs. He was supposedly hitting 89 or so on the gun, which is fireballing for Cyle. Jameson Taillon is out with a mild groin strain, and has graduated to long toss. He should be back in early May. And lest we forget, RP Codi Heuer had Tommy John last year, and could be back at midseason. He’s graduated to throwing live BP.
For the Marlins, old pal Johnny Cueto is on the shelf with a bicep injury and is rehabbing at extended spring training. Starter Trevor Rodgers is out indefinitely with an indefinitely defined arm injury suffered a week or two ago, and has yet to pick up a baseball. Starting shortstop Joey Wendle has been out since early April with an intercostal strain.

Letting him get another inning was probably an unwise decision, the velocity seemed to drop 1-2 mph unsure due to plan or fatigue or confidence, still no idea where the hell the pitch is going, but to his credit Kilian put up a zero and I would probably not let him start the third, but I also understand they need someone to eat innings.
If the Cubs take the lead I would not let him go out, but if not the third should be his last inning based mostly on the pitch count anyway.

Probably the smarter move to extend him the QO and graduate more young guys next year, but I feel like any team with room for Edwin Rios and Eric Hosmer can make room for Cody Bellinger.

Because there’s no way Wisdom would hit a ground ball?
Or why not use Magical to bunt since he actually does that as part of his game and you took Hosmer out for a runner anyway?
BVSQuote Reply
That’s not aging well, except for the condtional tense up front.
BVSQuote Reply
BVS,
Yeah, I mean, it all just looks terrible in retrospect. Hosmer laying down a decent bunt and Mancini getting thrown out at 2nd but Hosmer reaching 1st safely was probably the least likely outcome, I’ll grant Ross that. But he was SO unprepared for that scenario it was like he didn’t even bother coming up with a plan. He brought in a pinch runner BUT DIDN’T HAVE HIM RUN. I don’t think having Wisdom bunt made sense, but having someone do it for him in some kind of “we’re tying this game or we’re burning it down trying” effort would have been nice? I don’t mind letting Wisdom hit, but not AT LEAST sending the runner after having ground into 37 double plays already is mind boggling. The players are outperforming Ross and the front office this season, and that’s bizarre as fuck.

I will say that when the Cubs have lost BN that it suggests they’ll need to actually do something soon, also my recollection prior to flushing that game like so many others this week was that the bunt was a really bad one that I feel most of us agree should never have happened
Rice CubeQuote Reply
Rice Cube,
I think it was just an aggressive defensive play. There’s not a whole lot you can do to cheat toward second on a bunt since you have to guard against getting doubled off on a popup. It certainly would have made sense to pinch run for him after his single. That’s my mildest beef, probably, but it sure would have made more sense than what happened.
andcountingQuote Reply
Rice Cube,
I don’t think the bunt in and of itself was terrible. In the context of how the rest of the inning played out it’s abysmal, but maybe the worst thing is being told by all parties, or at least being led to think by a series of winks and nudges that the roster is made up of what management believes is the best construction available only to have your designated hitter bunting with the game on the line. It suggests that the justification for keeping Mervis and Morel down in AAA is a bad faith argument.
I don’t understand the intricacies of playing time rules, but if I were Morel’s or Mervis’s lawyer hitting the Cubs with a lawsuit for manipulating service time, that bunt call would be exhibit A. “So you expect us to believe you were fielding the best team possible? Explain . . . THIS!!!!!”

Rice CubeQuote Reply
Pretty much any way you slice it, the home team’s odds increase slightly even if the original bunt goes as planned. BUT, compared to if Hosmer had hit into a double play, even the outcome the Cubs got from his bunt was far superior to the ~90% win probability the Nationals would have making it a runner at third with 2 outs.
Whether he’s a worthy DH or not, Hosmer is a shoe-in GiDP HOF’er. Something had to be done.

Two major differences, I think. One, Heyward wasn’t broken, but the Cubs tried to unlock another level. Seems like they broke him in the process and he never got right again. Bellinger knew he was broken and so did everyone else, so maybe the only way to go was up. Two, they’ve had a lot of turnover in coaching and player development, so it’s possible the newer blood was able to find tweaks that worked.
PerkinsQuote Reply

berselius,
Can’t wait for the next preview, I’m trying to diversify my thinking so I don’t become part of the Cubs blogosphere echo chamber, kind of tough to do when everyone’s on the same wavelength most of the time though
