Starlin Castro has 200 hits and Andy Dolan doesn't understand stats

Like it says, Castro got his 200th hit in the first inning. Not at all related to that, Andy Dolan is a great example of why someone who doesn’t understand something shouldn’t be talking about it. I’m not talking about brain surgery and Dolan shouldn’t talk about baseball stats.

He has five games after this one so let’s assume he plays four of them and gets at least four PAs in each, he’ll have 16 PA (ish) to get four more BB…that’s a bit higher than his walk rate so far. I probably underestimated the number of PAs he’ll get, but with the way this team makes outs, I think it’s about right.

At what point do the opposing teams just play their SS up the middle when Castro is batting? Maybe he’s hitting them high enough that it wouldn’t matter.

    My Moneyball mini-review:
Very well written, directed and acted. Seemed like the baseball version of Social Network so I wasn’t surprised to see that Sorkin was one of the script adapters at the end. Hard for me to see how any baseball fan wouldn’t like it. I loved it which I’m sure was influenced by my love of Brad Pitt and baseball, of course.

    Couple Bubbles thoughts

    1. Congrats to Starlin. I know its just a stupid but the kid just impresses me. I see no reason why next year he cant swipe 20 bags and hit 15.. I think he will eventually be a 17-25 HR type of guy. He is definitely a cornerstone IMO.

    2. Shark has been pretty f’n solid this year.. Never thought i would write that. I mean why cant he be a valuable reliever? Too bad we are going to fuck him up by making him a starter

    3. I liked the Carlos Pena year.

    4. Its gonna be sad with no Aramis or Z

I didn’t have a problem with Andy’s use of stats. It’s not like he was doing a serious analysis of the team, he was setting up jokes. I’ve done the same thing. My biggest criticism is that it wasn’t nearly as funny as a lot of the other stuff he has written.
