OV “Daily” Facepalm 7-9-2014

Happy Arismendy Alcantara Day!

a-alcantara1Of all the strange consequences for prospects under the current CBA, perhaps the strangest is this: the less potential a prospect has, the quicker he is likely to make the majors. If your goal as a prospect is to get to the “Bigs” as soon as possible, the sweet spot is being good enough to contribute at the major league level, but with low enough upside that you probably won’t be a significant piece for a good team. No one pays attention to Justin Grimms arbitration clock. The Rays weren’t furiously checking their Super Two Calendar when considering the promotion of Kevin Kiermaier or Brandon Guyer. Prospects like Desmond Jennings, George Springer, and Kris Bryant, though, can pretty safely pencil in two dates for possible big league promotion: “Extra Year of Club Control Day” in April, and “Super Two Day” in June.

The Platonic Form of “good enough, but no real potential” might be Chris Owings of the Diamondbacks. Owings made the odd top 100 list before the 2013 season, but wasn’t anyone’s idea of a consensus top prospect. He performed reasonably well in the hitter’s paradise that is AAA Reno that year, was called up in September, and broke camp with the team this April. Such a quaint, 1990s-like timetable.

Alcantara is a notch above the Owings Zone, and will likely have only two days with the Cubs while Darwin Barney is on paternity leave. Tough luck, kid. You just need to work off a little bit of that extra upside in Iowa. On the bright side, both of Alcantara’s games will be on WGN. Hopefully he starts.

Race to the Top

The Cubs managed to drop both halves of a double-header against the Reds yesterday. Meanwhile, the Astros, Rockies, and Phillies all won, moving the Cubs to within a game and a half of the worst record in baseball. The Diamondbacks did manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory thanks to an Addison Reed blown save, mitigating what could have been a banner day for the Cubs in the race to the top. #1 draft pick fever: it’s spreading!

Manny Ramirez, Mentor

Who would ever have imagined this three years ago? Manny was then considered so aloof and self-centered that his name was synonymous with obliviousness. Now multiple people are floating the idea that he’s an effective hitting coach and a good influence on prospects with a straight face. I am fully bracing myself for the inevitable hiring of Ozzie Guillen by the Marlins as a Social Media Consultant.

IFA Trades

So far, the Cubs’ supposed discovery of a market inefficiency in the value of 2014 pool slot value hasn’t panned out. The Brewers, one of a few teams pursuing space this year, traded Rodolfo Fernandez to the Athletics for $339,000 in space. They still need at least another $150,000 to sign Gilbert Lara, so don’t be surprised if the Cubs end up stepping in. Meanwhile, the Rays acquired almost $1 million in space from the Marlins for pitcher Matt Ramsey. The Rays are going into the max penalty regardless, but are poor enough that they can really use the dollars saved in tax money.

Fernandez and Ramsey make Ronald Torreyes look like an elite prospect. If that’s where the market is at, it’s no surprise that the Cubs haven’t made any moves.

Dylan Cease Signed

35th-rounder Jordan Minch has agreed to terms, and sixth round high school stud Dylan Cease signed for $1.5 million last week.

That’s a pretty steep price to pay for a high schooler about to undergo Tommy John surgery, but hopefully he turns into something special down the road. The amount of money that Cease required pretty much closes the book on the hopes that the team would be able to land one of the late-round top 200 players that it drafted. Isaiah Gilliam, Michael Cantu, and Riley Adams were always longshots, though, so no big loss.

Daily Facepalm: 4/4/13

Did the Cubs win yesterday?

Minor League In

Cubs signed Donnie Murphy to a minor-league deal. He's a better option than Edwin Maysonet or Alberto Gonzalez in my opinion. Hopefully he never sniffs our major league roster, but if Barney is out for an extended period, you could do worse than Murphy (of course, you could do better).

Minor League Out

Cubs lost Robert Whitenack on waivers to the Cleveland Indians. Maybe the Cubs will trade Hector Rondon back for him! Whitenack is the latest reminder that recovery from TJS is just not 100%. He was hurtling up prospect lists until the surgery a few years back, and just never came back with the velocity he had when he left. Hopefully he can figure it out in Akron.

Cubs Game Today?

Daily Facepalm – 9.12.2012

Obstructed View Daily Facepalm

The Cubs lost to the Astros 1-0 in what quite possibly could be the worst game of baseball ever played. Between the two teams there were ten hits, six errors, and one meager run. The only reason the otherwise merciless crapfest ended was because Starlin Castro couldn't outrun Dave Sappelt's stupidity, preventing Castro from scoring the tying run before Sappelt made the last out at third. Thank goodness that shit didn't go to extras.

Do the Cubs Have a Game Today?

I'm honestly afraid to look. But I'm pretty sure they do.

Most Valuable Aramis

Aramis Ramirez is having a career year with the Brewers, While it's true that his when-it-doesn't-count production will go for naught for the late-blooming Brewers (it could happen, but it's not gonna happen), imagine what kind of year he could have had for the Cubs. Let's take a look at just how little any of the Cubs' games have mattered this season:

  • Since the conclusion of the Cubs' very first game, they've never been closer than one game out of first place.
  • After the first series, they never got closer than two games behind the division leader.
  • The Cubs haven't trailed in the division by single-digit games since May 22.
  • They haven't trailed by fewer than 20 games since August 1.
  • They haven't been within a game of .500 since the end of the first series of the season.
  • Lest a winning streak were to cause Aramis to feel undue pressure or smell the disgusting whiff of hope, the Cubs haven't won more than four games in a row.

By my calculations, given the minuscule intersection of the sets of Games that Count and Games that Involved the Chicago Cubs, Aramis could have been a 60 WAR Cub this year. And somehow the Cubs would still manage to win fewer than 60 games.

Fortnightly Facepalm: 6.3.12 Draft, Soler, Baez, Garza, Dempster

I guess there's something going on tomorrow?

The MLB draft is tomorrow. The Cubs worked out possible first round picks Carlos Correa (SS) and Max Fried (P) earlier this week, and several draft evaluators are prognisticating that the Cubs will take high school OF Albert Almora. It's nice not having to worry about the Cubs picking another Tyler Colvin or Homer Simpson.

Jorge Soler's free agency is now officially official

The Cubs can now officially pursue Jorge Soler, His agent wants all offers submitted by Thursday, which is well before next month's CBA spending deadline. I guess we'll find out soon if the Cubs (or some other team) did have a handshake deal with him after all. The rumored Cubs deal earlier in the offseason was 4/27, and I hope that's not true. The Cubs need young talent, but at what price? Young talent is what teams need, but price is as big a factor in their value as aging curves. That amount of money would be better spent on a free agent rather than a guy with a ton of uncertainty who, even if he does pan out, will have a relatively expensive baseline to negotiate further contracts while he's under team control. The Cubs can afford it, but there are probably better ways to spend their money without overreacting to the new CBA.

The Cubs brass do seem to be impressed with Soler. Sveum said he likes his bat, but thinks that Correa might be a little better.

Javier Baez does what he wants

Last night Javier Baez hit a 4,000 foot HR (video below) and was later drilled in the ribs for swinging at a 3-0 pitch with a 13 run lead. The opposing manager was as obvious as possible about the pitch, coming out to talk to the pitcher immediately after the swing. Both were immediately ejected. Hopefully the opposing team also took the rest of the night off and refused to swing at every pitch for the rest of the game, since they already said the game was over. Asshats.

Also mentioned in dj's recap, Josh Vitters is still hitting well. He had a homer and a double in last night's game and now has a .276/.327/.470 line (.341 wOBA) on the season. Good thing for him that Ian Stewart isn't really staking any claim on the 3b job for next year. Speaking of Stewart, his bum wrist is bothering him yet again.

Matt Garza trade rumors heating up

John Heyman has reported that the Yankees have already expressed some interest, and Olney thinks that the Blue Jays could be a good partner. Garza has AL East Experience which gives him extra value to those teams. It's too bad the Rays likely won't have much interest in bringing him back, I'd love for the Cubs to crack into that farm system.

Speaking of pitching fire sales

The Dodgers could be a destination for Ryan Dempster. According to CBS's Danny Knobler they're looking to pursue pitching and hitting  (what else is there?), and wanted Dempster a few years ago before the Cubs extended him.

How's that Marlon Byrd trade working out?

Maroln Byrd with the Red Sox: 102 PA , .271/.287/.393, .257 wOBA, -0.3 WAR

Michael Bowden with the Cubs: 9.2 IP, 7.45 ERA, 5.61 FIP, 4.98 xFIP, -0.1 WAR, designated for assignment

I guess the Cubs are winning this trade (dying laughing)

Just because

Daily, er, Monthly Facepalm – 5.31.12

Cubs slip from last place

The Cubs sweep of the Padres puts them one game behind in the race for the #1 pick. The Cubs are tied with the Twins for the second pick.

Buried in this Hobbitton Times article about the sweep was a nugget about Ryan Dempster putting a hole in the wall next to his locker after his poor start. ZOMG, he's so emotional and out of control. Time to start concern trolling him about needing a psychologist, right Paul?

Sveum ♥ Mather

Dale Sveum continues to bat Joe Mather third in the order. Joe Mather.

"I thought I'd put somebody in there that might juice the team with a home run, or a three-run homer or two-run double, something like that. Just going to see if he can spark the team now and do some things," Sveum said. "Since I've put him in there, he's pretty much had a quality at-bats, hit some balls really hard right at people."

Mather has the second highest SLG on the team. Arranging a Cubs lineup this season is pretty much just deckchair rearranging, but Joe Mather's hot tear to start the season has only managed to drag up his wOBA projection to .300, just a hair behind Darwin Barney. I think he should definitely be in the lineup against LHP, but ugh. (via Muskat + Kruth)

Tweets from the other day

Is that like saying cause/effect?

So many levels. That a guy who was DFA'd in spring training is our MVP, that the offense sucks, and that Dale Sveum thinks a middle reliever is the most valuable pitcher on the team.

Phil Rogers suggests a Soriano landing spot

Apparently Travis Hafner is injured again. It's probably only news at this point if Hafner is *not* injured. Cleveland is playing well in a division that was supposed to be dominated by the Tigers and could be interested in a "suddenly" power hitting DH. This isn't that much of a surprise though, aside from his defensive resurgance pretty much all that's left of Soriano's game is his power. Offensively he's the reverse of the empty batting average hitter – instead of a zillion singles with no walks and xbh, most of his (small) offensive value is just hitting HRs. I do wonder how much DHing could help him at the plate though – he's clearly been hurting for weeks now in the OF without getting any relief.

Is there a Cubs game today?

No.

Cubs work out possible first round pick

Carlos Correa worked out at Wrigley yesterday. He's a 17 year old SS from Puerto Rico. I bet he and Geovany Soto know each other, since it's just a small island and everyone knows each other /GROTA Rob. Sveum himself threw BP to Correa. He might not drop to the Cubs – Klaw thinks the O's will grab him at 4.

Anthony Rizzo back soon

According to Brett at Bleacher Nation, Rizzo is expected to return from his sore wrist today.

Jason McLeod spoke to the media yesterday

Brett was all over it. Summary of his summary: the Cubs are looking for pitching, Rizzo is in "finishing stages".

Practice Game Recap

Paul Maholm had a good outing, striking out six over five innings and allowing no runs. Carlos Marmol also pitched a scoreless inning in his first outing since having an MRI on his neck for a hand problem. Castro drew his first walk of the spring.

Is there a Cubs game today?

The Cubs travel to the Reds at 3 pm CT. Len and Mick have the call, and Matt Garza will take the mound for the Cubs.

Is there baseball that counts tomorrow?

Indeed, the Mariners and the A's kick off the season in Japan tomorrow morning,

Will I be able to watch it?

Sure, if you feel like getting up at 5 AM (3 AM on the west coast, where these teams are from). And only if you live in the Seattle area, or bought MLB.TV.  From what I've seen no one is airing the game in the Bay Area. It's nice for MLB to work on its relationship with Japan, but based on the marketing of the games here it's like it wants everyone else to forget about it. I've seen plenty of ads for the Cardinals-Marlins game next wednesday on ESPN which are being trumpeted as the season opener.

Burn of the day

Kerry Wood:

It only took you guys a week to notice I wasn’t out there. You guys are right on top of it.

Former Cub Brandon Guyer is mixed up in this Matt Bush mess

The car that Matt Bush was driving in his drunken hit-and-run belonged to Brandon Guyer. If the police can determine if Guyer knew Bush's license was suspended, he may also face criminal charges. The 72-year old motorcyclist that Bush hit (and ran over his head) has become unresponsive. Andrew Friedman has stated that Bush will never play for the Rays again. Hopefully he'll be playing in the Florida Penal League for a long time.

It's all sunshine and rainbows for Dale Sveum

Multiple players are lauding Dale Sveum for his spring, saying that he managed to stress fundamentals without making it boring.

Media beating the trade Marlon Byrd drum, bullpen news

As far as I can tell, after Buster Olney made an offhand remark about a comment on someone else's blog about Marlon Byrd being a good fit for the Braves, suddenly Marlon Byrd is being "shopped around".  According to Gordo the Cubs have talked to the Nationals and Braves about a Byrd trade, and alluded to the vague "we could have a trade" before opening day quote that Hoyer gave last week. Trading Byrd would clear the way for top prospect Brett Jackson, who Sveum thinks is more than ready for the big leagues. They'll trade Byrd for the right package but I think these trade offers are being instigated by other teams.

Gordo also said that Shawn Camp is expected to make the pen, and it looks like he canceled out Sveum's endoresment of Coleman late last week. Right now it looks like it will be Marmol, Wood, Dolis, Russell, Camp, Wells, and one of Coleman, Castillo, Maine, and less likely Parker or de la Cruz.

Pic of the day

An appropriate response to Tim's excellent post yesterday about ESPN punching bag Steve Bartman. Leave him alone, assholes.

DirectTV might lose WGN

TribCo and DirectTV are still hammering out their tv contract, with a deadline at the end of the month. If they can't reach an agreement WGN would be pulled from the lineup, as well as proramming from a few other Trib-owned stations (Mets, Phillies). Even more importantly you local Chicagoites would lose access to The Vampire Diaries via DirecTV. Won't TribCo think of the children?

Anything interesting happen over the weekend?

Eh. Dempster was knocked around in a minor league game yesterday, but who knows if he was working on something. I missed yesterday's game, but apparently Joe Mather had a Johnsonian/Fuldian incredible catch in CF.

Is there a Cubs game today?

It's going on right now, apparently. The Cubs are playing the Padres. Len and Mick have the call on mlb.com. Bryan LaHair just doubled in Starlin Castro for the Cubs first run.

MLBTR Cubs offseason in review

Tim Dierkes over at MLBTR just posted his offseason in review piece for the Cubs. They break down the moves that impact the 2012 roster, but there's not much to say about it. This team is going to stink. The biggest move by far was snagging the Superfriends, and we're just waiting to see everything pay dividends down the road. Money quote:

It'll be interesting to see how they react this summer or in the 2012-13 offseason if the Cubs are better than expected this season.  When Hoyer's Padres exceeded expectations in 2010, he didn't deviate from his long-term plan, avoiding trading top prospects at the deadline and following through on the Adrian Gonzalez trade after the season.  I expect something similar from the Cubs, who still have a few decent trade chips.

Recent mostly meaningless transactions

Possibly slightly less meaningless transaction

The Cubs signed Shawn Camp to a minor league deal. Camp recently released by the Mariners, who said they wanted to get younger. Camp has been a solid reliever for the past few years in the AL East. He's a ground ball pitcher with a career 4.12 FIP (3.99 xFIP), probably better than most of the scrubs the Cubs have competing for those spots. It might be too late in the spring but I'm hoping he lands a spot.

The Cubs lineup is nightmare fuel for Dale Sveum

Dale Sveum says he's losing sleep over lineup construction. In the end lineup construction is relatively meaningleess, provided your pitcher isn't batting first, but it's an unenviable position to decide in which order to put all of the Cubs square pegs into the round holes of the lineup. A quote from this article also prompted a thread at Tango's blog about the fragile egos of players with respect to lineup positioning.

Rotation, most of bullpen set, then not set

Dale Sveum said during an interview with Jim Bowden early this weekend that Chris Volstad had one a rotation spot, then backed off the comments later that day. It looks like the rotation is going to be Dempster, Garza, then Samardzija, Volstad, and Maholm in some order. Marmol, Wood, Russell, and Dolis seem to be locked into the bullpen, and also implied Coleman is probably headed to the pen as well. The process of elimination says Randy Wells will probably get the long relief role for now, and the last spot could go to Lendy Castillo. Camp was signed since that report came out, and he's probably a better pitcher than everyone on this list except Marmol.

Tempering Kerry Wood expectations even further

Muskat has a blog post up about Kerry Wood's spring. He's only made four appearances, pitching 3 2/3 innings. He's slowed it down this spring, and has mentioned havign back spasms already. Everyone is bending over backwards to say the back stuff isn't the reason for this. On the less pessimistic side, a vet like Kerry Wood shouldn't need much time to get ready. It sounds like he's been pitching plenty on the side and just needs a little more work on his breaking ball. Given his role it's not like they need to stretch him out, or work on more than those two pitches.

"Minor League Guy" is the Cards #2 prospect, apparently.

Not applicable. But Paul Maholm didn't get rocked by the Giants' A ball team.  So there's that.

It's Gordo's World and We're Just Living In It

Today Gordo speculates that whoever loses out in the Great Cubs Rotation Chase of 2012 will somehow be a valuable trade commodity. To be clear, he thinks that a pitcher that loses out to Jeff Samardzija will have trade value. To be honest, I couldn't read much more than the first couple of paragraphs, but I assume he later discusses how the Loch Ness Monster is totally real and a potential valuable trade commodity.

Soler? I Barely Even Know Her!

Jed Hoyer vehemently denied the Cubs have any sort of pre-arranged deal in place for Jorge Soler.

He stopped short of denying that there is such a thing as a Soler, saving Gordo the trouble of writing a piece that not only claims that Soler does exist, but that he is calling FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE!!

Jed Says Lots of Stuff

Carrie Muskat gives a pretty good rundown.  Nothing earth-shattering, but when one of the Superfriends speaks, you better damn well listen.

Carlos Marmol's Elbow is Fine

He apparently had hand cramps, and an MRI verified that there is no significant nerve injury.  Marmol is just doing his bit to fill the Zambrano-shaped hole still left in everyone's hearts.

Opening Day Weather Watch

Right now the forecast calls for a high of 56, a low of 46, and morning showers.  Given that I have fully expected snow on Opening Day after all of this 80+ degree baseball weather in the middle of March, I'll take it.  We'll see how the forecast changes as the day gets closer.

Somebody Wrote Something About Soriano That Doesn't Involve Torches and Angry Villagers

I pointed this out in the comments yesterday, but not everyone reads the comments. The soon-to-officially-debut-but-already-active, ChicagoSideSports.com, features a piece that actually speaks hopefully of Soriano's value to the 2012 Cubs. I wouldn't go that far, but it is nice to see something that doesn't focus purely on how OVERPAID AND TERRIBLE he is.

Was there a Cubs game yesterday?

I was so in shock at Wisconsin's ability to score more than 60 points that I failed to pay attention to yesterday's games. It looks like it was probably a good thing. In the Dbacks game, Ryan Dempster gave up eight hits and a walk in three and 2/3 innings, but shocklingly only three runs. Every 2012-relevant pitcher who played in that game gave up at least a run, except for Carlos Marmol who had a scoreless (two-baserunner) inning. Kerry Wood only managed to get one out while giving up four runs. The Cubs offense managed to scratch out eleven htis but only two runs, one on a Michael Brenly homer.

The Cubs lost the other split squad game 7-5 to the Rockies. No pitcher was particularly shelled but the team slowly bled runs the whole game. Junior Lake provided the main highlight for the Cubs with a three-run homer.

A few players suffered minor injuries yesterday. Darwin Barney felt tightness on his left side while warming up in BP, and Ian Stewart was scratched with a minor quad injury. Blake DeWitt was hit on hte hand by a pitch but probably just needs to rub some dirt on it.

Is there a Cubs game today?

They face the Giants at 3PM CT. Matt Garza pitches for the Cubs, and Len and Mick have the call on Gameday audio. Or you could just watch Florida State obliterate St. Bonaventure.

It was a big day for the favorites yesterday, with only favorite-to-upset VCU winning and stealth favorite to go deep in the tournament UNLV losiing. Mish, cwolf, and skipVB lead the group with 14 correct picks.

Lineup ordering speculation

ESPN's Doug Padilla takes a look at the possible opening day lineup. We know that David DeJesus is the leadoff hitter, and that Starlin Castro will probably be hitting third. LaHair's been talked about for the cleanup spot, Soriano's strong spring could push him back to fifth. But the most important slot that we haven't really received any tea leaves from which to read is the second spot in the lineup. Darwin Barney spent most of the time there last year but I haven't sensed a willingness from Sveum and Thoyer to give a .296 wOBA hitter the second-most PAs on the team. I like Padilla's suggestion, that everyone would just move up a spot, resulting in an opening day lineup of DeJesus, Castro, LaHair, Soriano, Byrd, Stewart, Soto, Barney, P. He has LaHair/Soriano flipped, but eh.

Cubs not leaving Peoria for South Bend

The owner of the South Bend minor league team announced on twitter yesterday that they renewed their affiliation with Arizona for another three years. The Peoria Chiefs are stil lstrapped for ash so the Cubs could move somewhere else in the nearish future, but it won't be to South Bend.

Practice Game recap

Travis Wood probably punched his ticket to Iowa yesterday, giving up six runs while only recording one out. Bullpen/tenth starter hopeful Casey Coleman also had a rough day, giving up four runs in less than two innings. The only particularly positive result of the day was that Randy Wells had three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and getting six grounders. He didn't strike anyone out, but it's certainly going to help his cause for the rotation.

Today's practice game(s)

RF Johnson

3B Cardenas

1B LaHair

CF Mather

LF Jackson

C Castillo

SS Lake

P Lopez

Paul Maholm and Andy Sonnanstine draw the short straw

They're starting split squad games this weekend in Arizona while the rest of the squad heads to Vegas.

Brett Jackson to start season in AAA

Not that much of a surprise. He's "blocked" by players who are being paid more than him, but probably aren't better players than him at this point. I think he'll be up by June once the Cubs can guarantee the extra year of service time.

Cubs to change minor league affiliate?

Brett from Bleacher Nation finds confirmation of a info heard a while ago about the Cubs A-ball team moving from Peoria to South Bend. Brett also mentions that it might be tough for them to move out of Peoria for political reasons (shaking down Illinois/Chicago for stadium $) but I don't think it would be a huge deal. Besides, doing a favor for the oh so sainted Golden Domers sycophants certainly wouldn't hurt in the Chicagoland area. Just put Jeff Samardzija out in front of the move.

March Madness starts today!

Brackets lock at the tipoff of the first game, which should be in half an hour or so. Give your Final Four in the comments, if you want to. I have Kentucky, Ohio State, Marquette, Kansas
