Taking a closer look at the Cubs supersized rotation

In News And Rumors by dmick89105 Comments

The Cubs currently have 6 starting pitchers on the roster*. Those 6 include Matt Garza, Ryan Dempster, Paul Maholm, Travis Wood, Chris Volstad and Randy Wells. Jeff Samardzija is also going to be stretched out in spring training, but may return to the bullpen when the season begins. The Cubs also have Andy Sonnanstine and Casey Coleman. If Trey McNutt gets off to a strong start in 2012 he could see some playing time too.

* Maholm is not yet on the roster as the Cubs are required to make a corresponding roster move as they already have 40 guys on their roster. The most likely candidates, in my opinion, is one of the left-handed relievers. Since Jeff Beliveau was added to the roster this offseason he’s not leaving. Neither is James Russell. That leaves John Gaub or Scott Maine. If Sonnanstine ends up relief the Cubs will have no use for either of them and with Beliveau not far away one of them is expendable. Other candidates could be Alberto Cabrera, Marcos Mateo or less likely Tony Campana.

Obviously the Cubs aren’t going to have a 6-man rotation. The 5 best will be in the rotation with the remaining starters available in case of injury or ineffectiveness. Below are 8 Cubs starters and their Oliver projected ERA and FIP.

Oliver ERA FIP
Garza, Matt 3.69 3.70
Wood, Travis 4.12 3.75
Paul Maholm 4.45 4.03
Dempster, Ryan 4.36 4.07
Wells, Randy 4.25 4.36
Volstad, Chris 4.75 4.64
Coleman, Casey 4.70 4.71
Samardzija, Jeff 4.51 4.72

Oliver thinks more highly of Wood than I’m guessing most other projection systems do. Oliver also sees a distinct difference between the top 5 and bottom 3. There is little difference between Volstad, Coleman and Samardzija. This is what the Cubs starters, including some work from Volstad would be worth using WAR:

Pitcher IP FIP WAR
Matt Garza 200 3.70 3.8
Travis Wood 180 3.75 3.3
Paul Maholm 170 4.03 2.5
Ryan Dempster 160 4.07 2.3
Randy Wells 140 4.36 1.5
Chris Volstad 100 4.64 0.8

The IP are my estimates and it’s not based on player projections, but rather starting the number 1 (Garza) at 200 IP and dropping each spot after that. That’s not a bad rotation based on the Oliver projections. CAIRO projects a 4.11 FIP for Wood for what it’s worth.

Madsen to the Reds. That bullpen is looking strong. The Cards are the favorites on paper but that team is littered with guys unlikely to stay healthy all year. Reds look like they could take the division with some ease.

    I heart Cubs fans

(dying laughing) this should come as no surprise to Cubs fans seeing that this one trick pony Theo Epstein is a joker …. Does not make a move for a great young first baseman that we can have “susatining success” with and build a great team around … Gets rid of a young dominant left handed pitcher in which we could build a good young team around .. And has left us with at best a 12 home run clean up hitter …. Theo Epstein congrats on putting a worse team on Wrigley Field this time then last year … and congrats on the ticket prices will probably be higher then last year so we can pay major league prices for a minor league team … And congrats for not understanding that with over 2000 kids coming out of college ball each year our minor league system builds itself … So when you say you like to start with the farm system you fail to realize that no year should ever be a rebuilding year for any team because fans come first and no fan wants to go through what we saw last year, and what will most likely be even worse this year … Theo Epstein you are a one trick pony and I hate you !!!!
Dear Theo and Jed,

Hi! How are you doing? Enjoying Chicago so far? We haven’t had much of a winter here yet, so it’s probably been easy and comfortable for you to get to work at the corner of Clark & Addison. I hear you two have been pretty busy working late nights, examining the organization from top to bottom; so far I like all the deals and signings you have made in re-making the Cubs major league roster and acquiring additional depth for the minor league system.

I’m excited about the future. You guys had success together in Boston and I know you know what you’re doing and believe me, I understand your method. You can’t just go for the quick fix as the Cubs have for the last decade; if the two of you and Jason McLeod and the others you have brought in can build a strong top-to-bottom organization, then the Cubs can become a team that can contend for the postseason every year, and win a couple of times in a decade like your old team in Boston did.

I get it. And I like the way you’ve begun the process. It’s the right way to go.

I have only one question this morning. Why haven’t you signed Kerry Wood yet?
.

Fortunately for the fans, Hub Arkush blew the lid off that bullshit yesterday. This is about 2 things:

1.) Ted Phillips knows less about football than the ball itself
    2.) Money

Ruskell is already here, already under contract. It basically is a break-even move to fire Angelo and elevate Ruskell, and that, as Hub says, is the extent of Ted Phillips’ football knowledge. So they play-act at a search, let the good candidates get gobbled up, make the rejection of their overtures towards a couple candidates very public, and then say “Well, Ruskell is the best last option.” They sabotaged this “search” from the outset by guaranteeing A.) that Lovie would remain HC in 2012 and B.) by publicly stating Lovie would involved in the search and hire. The Bears (and I only realize this now after hearing Hub yesterday) never wanted another GM. It was always Ruskell. If someone falls in their lap, they might hire them. But the Bears will be as inert as possible until the time when they must hire a GM (around mid-February), and unless someone begs for the job, they’ll hire Ruskell and pretend like they were forced into making the decision they made the minute Angelo was fired.

Which is a really long-winded and bitter way of saying no, I am not surprised by this. (dying laughing)

The Bears aren’t hiring a GM, and I should have realized that after the PC, but I got smokescreened badly. They are hiring a Pro Personnel Director, despite their protestations to the contrary. So Lovie isn’t hiring his boss–he’s hiring his co-worker.
