The Children Are The Future-Cubs Minor League Update Sponsored by STATS Inc

Iowa

Josh Vitters hit his 2nd HR in two days and is now sporting a .868 OPS. Beef Castle also hit a HR off former Cub and longtime personal favorite Angel Guzman. Chris Volstad was super shitty as always giving up 9 hits and 5 ER in 5 IP.

Smokies Game 1

This game went well into extra's with the Smokies knocking out future Cub…err Dodger prospect Zach Lee before the 4th inning. Logan Watkins went 3-6 with a walk & Jae Hoon Ha was 2-5 with a walk of his own. Michael Burgess was 1-3. The pitching was awful as Kevin Rhoderick's season and stock has imploded. We can't even make good RP's this year folks.

Game 2

Trey McNutt failed as a RP giving up 3 ER and 2 BB in 1 IP. On the bright side Zach Rosscup worked 3 scoreless innings while striking out 5. Junior Lake was 2-4 and Logan Watkins had another nice game batting 2-4 with a BB.

Daytona

PPD

Peoria

Chadd Krist went 1-3 with a walk. That is literally the best thing about this game. Move along.

Boise

Nobody was injured in this game. That is literally the only good thing that happened. Move along.

AZL Cubs

Jorge Soler hit his first pro HR last night and you can watch it here (H/T Cubs Den). Shawon Dunston Jr is back in the land of the living going 3-4 and Lendy Castillo continued his brave struggle vs David Patton disease by throwing 4 sparking innings of no run ball while fanning 5 batters.

  1. Letting PSU play and letting them play on TV, makes that fine meaningless. This is the skeleton of a devastating penalty, but as has been the running theme of this saga, filthy lucre trumps everything.

  2. so i had a mini rant on Sat that lead to a back and forth with Harry P. It centered around this- KG on Friday was telling some fan not to pay any attention to rookie ball stats because they don’t matter. Then on Sat told some other guy that all Dominican League stats don’t matter either. To me that just smacks of arrogance and I got pissed and said that all stats matter even if they are on kids light years away from the bigs. What do you folks think? I’ve only taken a quick glance but say last year I wanted to see who had the best OPS’s in DSL last year. So the guy at # 3 right in front of our own Jeimer Candelario had a MONSTER season in the DSL and totally sucks ass in the low minors. See the stats don’t matter! Only, the guy was 20 years old. Obviously a 20 year old still in DSL is way too old for the league and probably you shouldn’t place too much stock in his great season. Candelario on the other had was 17 and posted a .921 OPS. I think it would have been totally reasonable on that alone to say hey this kid might be worth looking at in the future.

I don’t post DSL here because honestly, its not worth my time. Those kids are too far away but I refuse to believe that there is NO value to recorded stats in either the DSL or AZL leagues. Just take it in context.

I’m surprised they took away the wins. It isn’t like the scandal impacted the W/L record, but I guess it was one of the harshest thing they could do to impact the program.

But it does suck for all the people who are impacted by this that weren’t involved (Band, Cheerleaders, etc.), but something had to be done to punish the institute.

I guess this should be posted here: http://obstructedview.net/forum.html?mingleforumaction=viewtopic&t=118.0#postid-1656

If you’re at the game that day we can have the OV CON in the men’s room under the bleachers, if not, I’ll be around all that week.

I don’t like to invade Alvin’s territory, so we can come up with alternate plans. I don’t have tickets for the game, but I could easily meet up in a watering hole nearby either before or after.

Anybody else up for an OV CON? Maybe I’ll see if Kim DeJesus can join us.

  5. @ WaLi:
The first thing I thought of is that by vacating all those victories, that means Joe Paterno might no longer be the all-time leader in coaching victories. Technically speaking, of course.

That would be epic, but you are potentially excluding Josh here.

All stats matter, but the fewer stats you have the more important scouting is. If all you have is 1 year of stats, scouting is huge. The stats still matter, but if you can ge ta consensus from scouts you’re probably better off using that. By the time a player has 5 or 6 years of stats, scouts aren’t really that much of a factor. They still matter, but the stats mean a lot more by that time.

I disagree with what KG is saying. The stats do matter. The percentage at which they should be combined with scouting heavily favors scouting, but they do matter.

  7. As a record of the games, stats matter for anyone who wasn’t there, which is pretty much everyone but coaches and scouts in rookie league games. What you say about age appropriateness to the level makes sense too.

Even if rookie league stats don’t tell you much when comparing a bunch of players to each other, I think they’d be helpful in comparing the individual player to his own past performance at the same level or the previous level (whether that is HS or whatever).

  8. in my twitter rant i said basically that you take low minor stats with a huge grain and salt and tilt towards the scouts. But you dont ignore the stats. They count.

I just think overall that right now the “experts” in prospects that fans pay money to learn more from are shit. KG is a google feed of unnamed anonymous scouts opinions on players thats it. He knows nothing personally because he has no background in baseball or scouting.

I would love to do this! A meet up sounds great. We should all wear matching shirts that say, “you’re all racists, amirite!?”

    See you all there!

It’s on them to prove why they don’t matter or at least prove they don’t tell us much as far as how players progress. If there’s some information to be found in those stats (there is) then they matter. What KG and HP are saying seems silly to me. DSL and AZL stats are meaningless. OK, let’s assume they’re right for a moment. The stats go from meaningless to valuable at what level? That’s absurd. The stats cannot possibly go from meaningless at one level to valuable at the next.

  13. If stats were so meaningless at low levels of baseball, we’d see more high school players picked early who batted something like .230 with 1 home run and 8 RBI. Since we know that top high school players have good stats and tend to do better than those without good stats we can safely say that high school stats (opposing competition matters of course) is important.
