Mostly because we needed a new post, and also because this was one of the more enjoyable, albeit improbable, comebacks in recent Cubs memory, thanks in no small part to a certain random #9 hitter. The sweep was nice too.
The Cubs are now 9 back of Milwaukee and 1.5 up on STL, both of those teams will play today while the Cubs are off.
The Cubs also have a game up on SF (who plays MIL so either one losing is helpful in some way, maybe MIL because they need to know despair), they’re 1.5 back of the Mets (who play Arizona) and 5.5 back of ATL (who play Philly). So lots of losing is on the docket tonight, go Cubs.
Momentarily there could have been a chance for the Cubs to make up half a game against the Brewers, but alas the Reds are in the process of being useless
Hmm, wonder why Taillon wouldn’t start, although given his recent struggles it might not be the worst decision
Cubs starter for tomorrow’s finale at Nationals is TBD at the moment.
If Taillon starts as originally scheduled, expectation is Jordan Wicks will be activated from IL regardless with rosters expanding tomorrow. Cubs will have to make a 40-man move with Wicks on 60-day IL.
Don’t forget to add the extra game for all the tiebreakers the Cubs lost, but I guess we will worry about those when they actually tie somebody of note
I blame my cousin, who was at the game today. I went to a game with him 20+ years ago and he pointed out that watching the Cubs lose was the true Wrigley Field Experience (dying laughing).
There are, based on my Twitter feed, many people who thought a) heading into tonight the Cubs had a shot at making the playoffs, b) after the top of the eighth the Cubs had no chance of winning, and c) after tonight the Cubs have no chance of making the playoffs.
None of those beliefs is crazy on its own, but believing all three is batshit.

If I understand this correctly, the Cubs have 28 games left to make up 5.5 games which is more like 6.5 due to losing pretty much every tiebreaker
