The Obstructed View t-shirt winner is…

jherky.

Suburban Kid looked to be the winner entering the bottom of the 13th, but thanks to Reed Johnson, Darwin Barney, an intentional walk to Starlin Castro and a 3-run home run by Geovany Soto, jherky wins.

He, along with Megan, both predicted the Cubs would go 11-18 in the month of June. Megan predicted 95 runs scored and jherky predicted 116. The Cubs scored 108 so he was closest. We’re also going to give a shirt to Megan.

xoomwaffle was closest in runs scored. MO was off the most except for the guy who predicted the Cubs would go 26-3.

Urk was closest in RA. Mish almost nailed both RS and RA. jherky, Wrigley Mike, MO and myself were the furthest off on RA.

Wrigley Mike was about 580 hits off for Castro. Pretty sure he was fucking around. I hope. Of the people who predicted it seriously, MO was furthest off.

Quade is also being defended by former players. Matt Stairs(notes) played for Quade at Double-A Harrisburg approximately 20 years ago. He talked about how Quade tried getting his team out of a batting slump by having them hit balls up the middle while he was 50 feet away—unprotected. Quade was struck with a line drive at nearly 100 mph. He continued to coach the drills. Stairs praised his leadership during the incident.

Let’s backtrack for a moment before we return to the scene of the heroics. I have consistently said on this very site that I have not thought Marcos Mateo was a major league pitcher. Great arm, can’t throw strikes, too many home runs allowed, etc. Today, I give Mateo all the credit in the world. He was absolutely outstanding after Carlos Zambrano had to leave in the second inning with back problems. Mateo threw five shutout innings, threw just 56 pitches (37 strikes), gave up two singles and struck out six. A tip o’ the cap to you, Marcos Mateo. Maybe you became a major league pitcher today.

    maybe?

Being closest in RA was much more than I deserved, since I basically looked at some of the answers posted by knowledgeable statfagets and triangulated. The only bit of coherence in my numbers was that I guessed the wins low, and then guessed Castro’s hits low too, figuring that if they only won 9 games this month it would be because Castro was slumping.

I know, I know, this is fascinating stuff. But where else would I talk about it?

I posted a YouTube video of Z’s particularly strenuous first pitch above. I’m pretty reasonably sure that he won’t miss his next start and that he was probably cleared by doctors before he did this. I guess exiting a game means he can’t do anything except lay in bed. And not have dinner.

    Sickels:

Minor League Notes, July 1st, 2011

**I really don’t like the idea of pulling the plug on a prospect who is just 21 years old, but it is time we faced some facts about Chicago Cubs cornerman Josh Vitters. He still has the pretty swing, but his .279/.315/.442 line in 69 games for Double-A Tennessee is just not impressive, and his miniscule walk rate and impatience is in danger of dragging down his career.

    Star-divide

Vitters boosters will point to the fact that he’s fanned just 19 times and is still young for the level, and they have a point. It is still plausible that he’ll emerge as the player Cubs officials dream on, hitting for a high batting average with power. But while plausible, it no longer seems probable to me. His game is so strongly dependent on his batting average that, unless he can consistently hit .300 or higher, which seems doubtful to me, his OBP will be a drag on the offense.

He’s on course for a 14-homer season this year, which just isn’t enough for a corner guy, especially a first baseman. I note that his third base fielding percentage is down to .869 this year and that his range factor in 47 games there is terrible. He’s also played 26 games at first base, and it would surprise no one if Vitters ends up there in the end. And if that happens, he’ll really have to pick up the hitting to play regularly in a major league lineup.

It isn’t too late for him, but he’s got to make significant progress in the second half to still rank as an elite prospect.

Maybe you should e-mail Muskat to be sure, but the Cots contract blog says because Rami picked up the 2011 option, his 2012 option vests, and the Cubs have to buy him out if he doesn’t void it. If he’s traded, it’s guaranteed.

Cot’s has it listed as vesting if:

I wonder if the way it is worded it has to happen in that order to vest…

I know Cots says is automatically vests if he’s traded, but someone said earlier that it expired.

Also Levine made no mention of it in his article about trading him. It seems like too big of an omission for someone like Levine. It basically changes the whole scenario of what we could get back if he waives his no trade claus.
I know Cots says is automatically vests if he’s traded, but someone said earlier that it expired.

Also Levine made no mention of it in his article about trading him. It seems like too big of an omission for someone like Levine. It basically changes the whole scenario of what we could get back if he waives his no trade claus.
Well, Paul Sullivan couldn’t do simple math with the Silva contract, so you never know (dying laughing)
Cot’s has it listed as vesting if:

is traded & Ramirez exercises 2011 option

I wonder if the way it is worded it has to happen in that order to vest…
My understanding from Miles at the beginning of the season.: Once he picked up the 2011 option, the 2012 season became guaranteed if he was traded or if he achieved various personal achievements (top 5 in MVP voting for x number of years, World Series MVP, LCS MVP, etc.). If I recall correctly, the oly ones he had a chance of achieving was if the Cubs made the playoffs and we don’t have to worry about that anymore. So for all intents and purposes, Ramirez’s 2012 contract becomes guaranteed if he is traded without waving that clause.

I dreamed two nights ago that Aramis was traded to the Pirates. Probably won’t happen, especially since the Pirates in the dream were a mix of the MLB Pirates and my daughter’s tee-ball team. Mercurial Outfielder was also in the dream, but he was basically a block of text floating in the air.

I hope Soriano is still with the Cubs thru 2014 because they just might be in contention by then, and I hope he’s the guy who hits the game-winning grand salami in the bottom of the 9th against the Royals in the world series.

    It’s gonna happen

Looks like the Rays need the wins more than the Cards do at the moment so here’s hoping for a sweep, Raysfags.
The Rays have the 3rd most wins the AL (would lead the other divisions), and would lead the NL Central and be a half game back of the Giants in the west. They are on pace for a 90 win season and likely a third place finish and watching the playoffs from home.

I said the Rays would contend most of the year and they are doing just that; I got a lot of shit on opening day and the subsequent week about people telling me that Cubs will finish with a better record than the Rays (Rays started 1-8, mind you). So I’m pretty pleased, even if this is all for naught (i.e. not making the playoffs).

Konerko has played like an elite player, and Quentin’s been quite good minus the fielding.

I’m still pounding out the preview, but their offense is comical. Konerko has been hitting out of his mind and Quentin is quite good, but Dunn has sucked and they have three other players with negative double digit wRAA. It’s amazing that their offense is middle of the pack in the AL.

Agreed – neverminding Dunn, you have blackholes all over the place – 2nd, 3rd, LF, CF, C. Their future is probably a bit brighter than the Cubs for a year or two, but there is a lot of nothing in the pipelines and they have as many holes as we seemingly do.

At least they have pitching. If they manage to drag themself further up in the standings they’ll probably deal for a bat. KW is generally a good trader, Edwin Jackson notwithstanding.

Gersham’s tweets last night had me checking out Hudson’s numbers, and he’s been really, really good. He threw up a piece at BtB today about how he’s pitched in the last calendar year.

I figured their plan for this year was just to shed payroll and hope for the best. The team is built so well that it doesn’t actually surprise me that they’re doing so well.

The plan was to contend this year but A) not sacrifice the future and B) the single most important day was the first day of the draft.

They’ll probably make a move that looks like they are selling (Upton, maybe Niemann), but replace the person with a competent if not possibly better player (Jennings, Cobb, Torres) and hope the return on that trade would give them a major league ready youngish player. It’s also going to be brilliant when they trade Shields after this year and further stock their system.

that’s why I’ve wanted to scrap division play all this time, go with two 15 team leagues. best 4 (or 5 if that’s if they wanna do) make the playoffs in each league. simple. and traditional! because that’s the way it was pre-1969, except for more teams.

Google+ is in limited Field Trial
Right now, we’re testing with a small number of people, but it won’t be long before the Google+ project is ready for everyone. Leave us your email address and we’ll make sure you’re the first to know when we’re ready to invite more people.

Are you a part of the limited trial or something?
