Walk Off a Hero

Michael Busch was kinda scuffling, but my eternal optimism always thinks anyone can be a hero at any time in baseball. And boy did he pick his moment:

There was rain in the area and since Busch is apparently part cat, he decided he didn’t feel like being wet longer than needed and also decided that it was best if he left no doubt:

Too bad the Brewers also won but the Cubs are taking care of their own stuff so we have to be thankful for that.

  1. I wish the White Sox no particular ill, but it’d be cool to see them set a futility record like the 1899 Spiders or 1962 Mets.

I feel like I remember some comment on the broadcast earlier in the year that Dansby hates the off-day going into a scheduled off-day (dying laughing)

    Perkins,

Make sure she starts with Episode IV like a hood padawan

I’m likely to break her in on TCW and when she’s a bit older we’ll do the movies in the order R1, ANH, ESB, TPM, AOC, ROTS, ROJ.

  10. Rice Cube,

So after going to the I-IX marathon last weekend and calling it after VI, I’ve arrived at the point of view that the “Skywalker Saga” is really Anakin’s story, and it’s wrapped up in six movies. He was almost completely ignored in the sequels, and I think it’s fairer to treat them as supplementary “Star Wars Stories” like Rogue One and Solo rather than core Episodes in the saga.

Personally, I thought TLJ was the only sequel worth a damn because it was the only one with anything to say. JJ Abrams really messed up badly and Disney seems determined to insist its trilogy is on equal narrative footing as the other two. Had the ST been planned out, and had it addressed Anakin’s legacy properly, it really could have been something.

  11. Perkins,

Aside from maybe ROJ I never really cared about Anakin Skywalker. I know that’s what Lucas was going for (as much as he had a plan for anything), but in my head canon the OG triliogy is about Luke and the prequels were about Obi-Wan

  13. berselius,

I mean from GL’s perspective the first trilogy was about Anakin’s fall and the second about his redemption. Obi-Wan and Luke are obviously the most important supporting characters in that journey, but Anakin is the main character.

Admittedly I’ve grown to appreciate Anakin much more as a character because of TCW, which fleshes him out in a way the PT mostly failed to do. I like him and find him to be much deeper than Luke. Obi-Wan is still my favorite, though.

  14. Perkins,

I think Hayden did a good job as Anakin but the writing really stunted his impact, most of the actors were fine except the young kid who played small Anakin, he was just kind of there and annoying

  15. Rice Cube,

I’d agree with that. What’s sad is that HC is a decent enough actor and Natalie Portman a great one, but the writing and directing gave them so little to work with. Even worse is that they reportedly had insane chemistry on set but Lucas wanted Anakin to be more emotionally stunted and awkward, so none of it came through.

At least Irvin Kershner knew well enough to bottle and sell the sexual tension between Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher (probably helped that those two were actually sleeping together). When trying to depict a love strong enough to help nuke a religious order and the galactic government, using what he had would have been wise.

  17. Rice Cube,

He was officially assigned Ahsoka as his Padawan and he trained her near to knighthood. Then she got framed for a crime and the bulk of the council sold her out in the interest of politics, so when she was cleared she left the order, even though Anakin was always in her corner.

Given that “train a Padawan to knighthood” is generally one of the requirements to become a Jedi Master, that arc goes a long way to explaining why Anakin immediately flips out on the Jedi Council when they deny it to him.

Also it blew my mind when I realized Ahsoka’s voice actor is married to baseball’s original Scrappy Doo, David Eckstein.

  18. berselius,

Oh no while TCW introduces a lot of new characters (all the named Clone Troopers other than Cody, Ahsoka, and many others), it also has Anakin, Obi-Wan, Padme, Yoda, Dooku, Palpatine, and the rest.

It substantially improves the prequel trilogy retroactively since it fleshes out the characters and their relationships much better than the movies did.

I should note this is the TV series – the TCW movie is very bad.

  19. I was about to say that Skenes-Mastrobuoni was as big a mismatch as my softball team had against an A-league team this morning, but he actually managed to get a hit (dying laughing). We got stomped 28-2 and the margin felt even bigger.
