I was tempted to begin this column with the almost-obligatory lyrics from "War," a No. 1 hit song in 1970. But when Edwin Starr sang that war was good for "absolutely nothing'' (say it, say it again), he was recording a protest against actual warfare. My protest, on the other hand, is about something much more widespread, threatening and serious.
I'm talking about the proliferation of WAR: Wins Above Replacement. — Jim Caple
To Caple's credit, he at least acknowledges the value of WAR, but the above comment is just fucking stupid.

I think it was just a (failed) joke, nothing to get excited about. Also, I just skimmed the rest of the article, but most of what he wrote seemed fair. In particular, I don’t like how some people bring up a player’s WAR without having any idea how it’s calculated.

Yeah I think you’re right. It was just a failed joke. It went over my head and I agree the rest of his column was actually decent.

Yeah, it was a bad joke. It’s right in line with Caple’s usual schtick, from what I remember of it.
