I’d have to look, but I don’t remember a stretch last year in which the Cubs played such mediocre baseball. Other than the first 31 games, this team is basically .500. I’d like to think they’re better than that.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
They actually played .500 baseball from April 29 to July 28 (arbitrary endpoints, I know). From that point on, they had the best record in baseball.

Rizzo the Rat,
Good to know. Not good to know? Cards up 2-0 against Fernandez.
dmick89Quote Reply
So it was the trade for Dan Haren that put them over the top last year.
dmick89Quote Reply
3-0
dmick89Quote Reply
Fuck the Cardinals. Fuck Jose Fernandez. Fuck the Cubs for not knocking him around when they faced him.
Smokestack LightningQuote Reply
Well, at least the Cubs are playing at home against a mediocre team. Unless they have an unfavorable pitching matchup, they should be fine.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Cubs lose
dmick89Quote Reply
Ugh.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
The Lackey signing was good for about two months and since then not so much.
dmick89Quote Reply
Bryant!!!
Thought that was gone.
dmick89Quote Reply
Nice to see that Bryant has figured Sale out.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Rizzo gets a lot of outside strike calls.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Willson caught a break.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Zobrist!
dmick89Quote Reply
I much prefer the new pitch-to-contact approach Sale is using this year.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
It doesn’t seem to be helping his pitch count, though. At least not today.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Same here. Have to wonder if he’s saving his arm for when he plays for a good team.
Smokestack LightningQuote Reply
Baez struck out looking?
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
Momentary lapse of judgment.
dmick89Quote Reply
Of course.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Come on, Lackey.
dmick89Quote Reply
Cardinals win.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
I sure hope Maddon uses the bullpen to shorten the game today.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
I’m guessing Lackey starts the inning since it looks like Strop just started getting loose. Not sure why it took this long to get him up.
dmick89Quote Reply
Hopefully Lackey’s spot comes up and Joe is forced to pinch hit.
dmick89Quote Reply
dmick89,
Thank you, Robin Ventura.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Rizzo the Rat,
Yeah, what was we thinking? He wanted Lackey out of the game. Stupid.
I hope. (dying laughing)
dmick89Quote Reply
Bring in Heyward for defense, please.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Maybe Robin was hoping for bad Strop.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Throw strikes.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
That’s more like it.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Crap.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Fuck
dmick89Quote Reply
Smart move. Glad Joe made it.
dmick89Quote Reply
Don’t tell me what to do.
Wenningtons Gorilla CockQuote Reply
Yep. I’m too nice a guy and probably would have let Rondon finish the inning.
But this is precisely why you have Chapman.
Smokestack LightningQuote Reply
Only 99?
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Unfuckingreal.
Cabrera never had a chance.

Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
That’s a triple.
dmick89Quote Reply
Please don’t waste this opportunity.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Based on what Joe said, I get the feeling that they’ll probably send Contreras down when they activate Soler and Coghlan. Didn’t sound like he wanted to “lose inventory” which means they can’t option Szczur so Contreras probably goes down.

Eduardo Nunez ———————> Giants
I haven’t paid that much attention to SF this year. Are they struggling that badly with their IF?
Smokestack LightningQuote Reply
That’ll do.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Smokestack Lightning,
Didn’t they just activate Joe Panik?
dmick89Quote Reply
Really good PA by Baez here.
dmick89Quote Reply
How many pitches does it take to walk Javier Baez? 10
dmick89Quote Reply
They did. It’s a weird trade. Belt, Panik, Crawford, Duffy seems plenty sufficient. Nunez isn’t an upgrade over any of them, I don’t think.
Smokestack LightningQuote Reply
A nice and easy 9th, please.
dmick89Quote Reply
Never mind. Duffy is still hurt. I’m an idiot.
Smokestack LightningQuote Reply
Smokestack Lightning,
Yeah, not sure I understand either.
dmick89Quote Reply
Smokestack Lightning,
So am I. I though Panik was the only one still injured.
dmick89Quote Reply
Chapman’s K% in a Cubs uniform is 66%. I expected better.
dmick89Quote Reply
Chapman is getting squeezed.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Duffy is due back within a couple more weeks tho. So I stand by weird trade. Made by weird, weird people.
Smokestack LightningQuote Reply
Nice. Didn’t expect to beat Sale. Even pitch-to-contact Sale.
Smokestack LightningQuote Reply
Smokestack Lightning,
I didn’t either. This is a big win. I figured they’d have to take 1 on the south side to split the series and I didn’t think they would.
dmick89Quote Reply
Smokestack Lightning,
Yeah, he couldn’t quite cut it today.
Rizzo the RatQuote Reply
Would like to think the team’s starting to come alive again.
An appearance by the Good Jon Lester tomorrow would help.
