All I heard about Ausmus was shit from Kaplan and then that Detroit hired him. I’m sure Ausmus wanted the job because, hey, it’s a managerial job, but did he really want it? Shit, I don’t know.

Someone tweeted that they could’ve had Ausmus if they’d wanted him, but they decided to go in a different direction. Can’t remember if it was Loxas or Arguello. Definitely was someone non-kaplan though. Gammons insisted too that once Girardi said no, Renteria was their main guy, the rest was just due dilligence.

What I remember reading over and over at the end of the season, and still after Girardi re-signed, was that they wanted someone with experience. Turns out they were full of shit and all they really wanted was this: Dale Sveum gone.

I might have once thought the Cubs were putting the Castro and Rizzo (to a lesser extent) blame on Sveum, but I don’t anymore. They just wanted a new face. As berselius often says, they wanted to rearrange the deck chairs. Rich Renteria is probably as bad/good as Sveum.

He’ll be gone in two years so it doesn’t matter.

That struck me as horseshit from the beginning, because what experienced manager that fit with the organizational philosophy was out there to hire besides Girardi? You aren’t prying Maddon away from Tampa, and Eric Wedge is only experienced at sucking. Acta was the best experienced choice, and I guess nobody likes the way he runs a clubhouse.

Though I would have loved it if they re-hired Dusty. That would’ve been the best for so many reasons. Theo and Dusty working together, Dusty back in Chicago, the anti-moneyball talking heads not knowing how to react when Theo made Dusty stop bunting…would’ve been awesome.

I think he’ll go three years, but I don’t think he’ll be brought back. If the Cubs at least show some improvement for the 2015 season, I think it will help attendance enough that the Cubs won’t need to do as much deck chair re-arranging. Then, after another possibly decent but still no playoff 2016 season, the Front Office will be able to use the “we want to go in a new direction” line.

    2.5?

The team’s record will dictate how long Renteria is here and if I’ve learned anything as a Cubs fan, it’s that the Cubs will suck. They have some good position player prospect, but only two of them are realistically going to help the team out in the next year and a half. They don’t have shit for pitching and there much available in free agency.

They’ll be bad in 2014. Where they’re at in 2015 is the key to whether or not Renteria gets that third year.

The interest in Girardi struck me as horseshit and still does. I really find it hard to believe this team actually thought that 1. Girardi wouldn’t be re-signed by the Yankees early on and 2. that Girardi would have the least bit of interest in taking over a shitty team after managing the Yankees. It was a dream come true for Girardi in that he could use the Cubs as leverage to get the Yankees to pay more. Unless the front office just wanted to do Girardi a solid, I think the media was full of crap.

anyone heard contract numbers for renteria? i think thoyer should hire mickey morandini. says he does coaching for $300/session. that’s $48,600/year. according to the website, they can also bring in jacque jones as hitting coach and shawn estes as pitching coach and even have darren daulton come in to give spiritual guidance to the clubhouse a few times per week and still keep total coaching payroll < $200k.

    @ dmick89:
What makes you think they are just getting a new face? Sveum is basically a position player focused manager who is also supposed to have sound in game strategy.

The offense under the Cubs, no matter who the manager, was always going to be average at best. However the cornerstones of the offense either haven’t progressed like they need to or regressed. That’s on the coach.

I doubt Sveum would be fired if the Cubs were still this bad in 2013, but with Castro and Rizzo having better years than in 2012.

It’s why the whole staff wasn’t let go. Bosio did good work with the pitching staff.

All fair points. Might’ve been win-win. Girardi gets leverage to get more money from the yankees, and the Cubs get to tell the fans they took their best shot at a big name manager that would signal they’re getting ready to start winning for real.

Because 9 times out of 10 that’s what getting a new manager is about. Maybe 10 times out 10 for all I know, but as much due diligence as the Cubs front office has done, they don’t really know anything about Renteria. At least not in terms of what they’re hiring him for anyway.
