Let's move on to what really matters…Cubs "championship" baseball!
Iowa Cubs 3 @ New Orleans Zephyrs 0
This game was tied until the top of the 9th, when Julio Borbon scored on an error, then Brad Nelson homered. Mike Olt went 1-4 with 2 SO.
Brooks Raley was fucking awesome, scattering 3 hits and no walks over 8 innings. He fanned 6. Brian Schlitter recorded his 18th save with a scoreless ninth. Someone in the comments yesterday suggested he'll get a callup in September; I doubt it because he's not on the 40-man.
Tennessee Smokies 1 @ Birmingham Barons 2
Javier Baez had an uncommon bad day, going hitless with a strikeout. Both Matt Szczur and Arismendy Alcantara doubled.
Nick Struck did ok after his demotion, allowing an unearned run in 5.2 innings and fanning 3. Hunter Cervenka pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, and Armando Rivero took the loss with one run in 1.1 innings.
Washington Nationals 4 @ Chicago Cubs 2
Cubs are making a strong push for Rodon. With their loss, they've moved into sole possession of 4th place and are just 5.5 back of 2nd (the Astros, at 41-84, are an insurmountable 13 games up). This team blows and everyone but Donnie Murphy sucked yesterday (Junior Lake also doubled). Chris Rusin went 5.2 innings and allowed 2 runs on 10 fucking hits. Afterwards, a parade of shit relievers did their thing.
Clinton LumberKings 7 @ Kane County Cougars 4
Everyone hit except Jeimer Candelario. Gioskar Amaya and Rock Shoulders each doubled and singled, and Giuseppe Papaccio singled twice and walked.
Tyler Skulina started the game and got shelled. He allowed a quintet of runs and only went 1 deep into the 3rd inning. Rob Zastryzny inherited a runner, didn't let it score, and then allowed one run over his 3.2 frames. Andrew McKirahan allowed a single walk in his 2 scoreless, and Stephen Perakslis allowed a run in his one inning of work.
Boise Hawks 4 @ Tri-City Dust Devils 5
Yasiel Balaguert had a nice game, with a single and double. Jacob Rogers essentially did equally well, with a double and a walk.
Dillon Maples got crushed, allowing 5 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks over 4 innings. Corbin Hoffner and Tyler Bremer each went scoreless: Hoffner over 3 IP (5 K), and Bremer over 1 IP (2 K).

My fault, didn’t realize Schlitter wasn’t on the 40 man. Mostly just wouldn’t mind taking a look at him with the year he’s having in the PCL. Could be a decent bullpen callup next season.
If we end up with the second worst record after all, 1) I’m going to be really psyched for the Rule 4, because with all the good prep arms popping up it should be really really good, and 2) I’d imagine the cubs are going to be trading a toooon of IFA pool money next july, thanks to the budget overage.
