Iowa Cubs 5 @ Round Rock Express 13

Barrett Loux got the start for the Cubs and he didn't last long. Only an inning. He gave up 3 hits and 3 walks. All of the baserunners scored. He allowed a home runs, struckout 2 and walked 3.

Jaye Chapman pitched 2.2 innings, allowed a couple hits and run, walked 3 and struck nobody out. Cory Wade allowed 8 hits and 5 runs in 3 innings. Blake Parker was the only decent pitcher on the night. He pitched 1.1, allowed 0 hits and runs, walked 1 and struckout 2.

Logan Watkins keeps hitting. He hit his first home run of the season last night and was 2-4. He also doubled and scored 2 runs. Brett Jackson's new swing was 2-4 with a double and an obligatory strikeout.

Donnie Murphy was 2-4 with a double while Brian Bogusevic was 2-3 with a walk. JC Bocsan doubled and Brad Nelson was 1-4.

Tennessee Smokies 1 @ Pensacola Blue Wahoos 2

It seems like Dae-Eun Rhee has been around the minor leagues forever. It's a bit surprising to me that he was signed until 2007. I would have guessed no later than 2005, but the top of my head isn't very reliable. Rhee isn't the prospect he might have been. Multiple tommy john surgeries will do that a young person. He threw 4.1 innings, allowed a couple hits, 1 runs, walked 3 and struckout 1.

Brian Schlitter allowed an unearned run in 1.2 innings. He also allowed 2 hits and a walk. Zach Rosscup and Trey McNutt pitched scoreless innings, with Rosscup striking out the side.

Matt Szczur was 2-3 with a walk and a strikeout. He also stole his 2nd base of the year. It's no secret that I'm a little higher on Szczur than a lot of people. With David DeJesus's contract running out after next season, and Brett Jackson's new swing not paying early dividends, Szczur could be in line for that job.

Arismendy Alcantara was 2-4 with a strikeout. The only other hit in the Smokies lineup was by Ruvi Silva (LF). He was 1-4. Catcher Rafael Lopez drew a walk.

Clinton LumberKings 5 @ Kane County Cougars 6

The Cougars took a 5-1 lead into the 8th in what was looking like their first win of the season, but the LumberKings scored 2 in the 8th and 2 more in the 9th.

ASIDE: Why isn't LumberKings two words? Are they the only minor league team that merge two words together while also capitalizing both words? Odd.

The same Lendy Castillo taken by the Cubs in the rule 5 draft last year who pitched at the MLB level is now in A ball. He got the start and didn't suck, which he shouldn't have all things considered. He threw 5 innings, allowed 3 hits and a run while striking out 4 and walking 2.

Brian Smith pitched 2 scoreless and allowed a hit and a walk. He struckout 1. Justin Amlung then came in and gave up those 4 runs before having a clean 10th.He allowed 2 home runs, walked 1, allowed 4 hits and struckout 3.

Gioskar Amaya was 3-5 with a triple and a stolen base. Chadd Krist was also 3-5. He had 2 doubles. Pin-Chieh Chen and Rock Shoulders were each 2-5.

Any timeline on Barney getting back? I’m tired of seeing Lillibridge and Gonzalez out there. Sure Barney probably isn’t much better of a hitter than either of them, but we could use his glove out there. You would think that since we have such a shitty hitting team that our defense would be better, but unfortunately that isn’t true.

    @ WaLi:
In all seriousness, barring an event of Cub proportions, it should be soon-ish.

From Carrie: “Darwin Barney is cleared to do all activities. Will get stitches out end of week. Hoping to rehab at Minor League game this weekend”

    “Fun” facts:
Based on OPS+, the top 4 hitters on the Cubs: Castillo (204), Wood (186), Schierholtz (178), Villanueva (91).

Cubs have the second most errors (5) in the NL

Cubs have the 4th most Strikeouts in the NL (64) and conicidentally enough have 64 strikouts Pitched (3rd in NL).

Cubs are second to last in the NL in AVG (.186), OBP (.233), and OPS (.540)

Cool, so if he rehabs this weekend then hopefully he’ll be back next week if all goes well. I assume Gonzalez will then be released?

Watkins seems like a good prospect. He has improved his batting (OBP and SLG) from A to A+ and A+ to AA. Will be interesting to see how he does this year in AAA. Would he replace Barney next year if he plays well enough?

The general rule I have lived by when pulling quotes from someone else’s work is to A) Give credit, B) Link it, C) not quote so much of it that there is still reason to click to it if it is of interest to the reader.

Brett does this consistently, so even if he occasionally goes into a gray area, I’d think he should have enough good faith built up that he’s not just stealing intellectual property. Sullivan should fucking know it if he spends any time at all looking at a site that probably bumps his own traffic significantly. (It wouldn’t surprise me if Brett actually gets more traffic than Paul now.)

Sullivan picked the wrong fight though. Brett has turned into a rock star in the Cubs cyber world. You should have seen him at Cubs Convention. We couldn’t turn around without someone coming up to him and wanting to talk, have a picture taken, or just tell him their screen name and how much they love Bleacher Nation. I saw a guy blow right past Jesse Rogers and Bruce Miles to talk with Brett. Sullivan has to have spent a significant amount of time blocking Brett’s followers because they were PISSED OFF that Sully went after him. I’m still (dying laughing) about it.

I’m still intrigued by this whole thing. To make this claim, Sullivan has to have more than we’re aware of. Either that or he’s even dumber than I thought. Believe me when I tell you that I already thought the man was stupid as stupid gets. If there was a stupid scale, Sullivan couldn’t have been measured on it. He broke it.

    @ JonKneeV:
It wasn’t an ACB meetup. We didn’t have such a thing. He went up and talked to this one guy who sometimes commented (commented on HJE quite a bit IIRC) and said he hated us and that we called him a racist.

Both Mercurial Outfielder and I were very careful to not call him a racist. Sure, we had written at least a dozen posts about his racial bias, but never once called him a racist. Not in a post and not in the comments. We called him all kinds of other names, most of them not very nice, but racist wasn’t one of them.

I think it was the crowning moment at ACB.

that was during that whole HJE sucks up to Sullivan thing, which was kind of funny. He essentially contracted out his own defense. Couldn’t find anyone else to do it, so he had to buy it.

Among the people at the Cubs Convention it’s probably pretty close, but when you take into account everyone else, it wouldn’t be. Even as huge as BCB is, it’s not getting the traffic that the MSM papers are. They’re just too easily accessible for everyone, especially the older population. I’d be interested to see the readership numbers for BCB and the MSM sources for different age groups. Wouldn’t surprise me if BCB was somewhat close to the MSM among the youngest group.

Yep, my dad is 79 and still reads the Trib dead tree edition, even though he has been online since the mid-90s. Although he reads the sports pages every day, it would never occur to him (probably) to browse the Trib on the web. I’m sure there are a lot of Cubs fans in their 50s-80s who know of Sullivan or Wittenmyer but will never have any interest in bloggers coverage of the team.

My Dad isn’t a Cubs fan (not even a baseball fan), but it would never occur to him to read what a blogger has to say. He’s probably click away if he was led there. My Dad is part of the baby boom generation and most of those people wouldn’t have a lot of interest in reading what Al, Brett or any other blogger has to say.

I think the younger generation is where the comparison would be more interesting, but it would still heavily favor the Tribune, Sun Times and Daily Herald. Most Cubs fans are not active on blogs. If they were, the Cubs would have like 5000 fans. At the most.

The more I think about this, the more I start to think it wouldn’t even be close with the younger generation. Most of them just don’t care enough to go find a decent blog about the Cubs. They’re the type of fan that might watch them if they have nothing to do, check the news and then the box score and that’s about it. If they read anything, it’s probably Sullivan, Whittenmeyer, Muskat and Miles.

Whaaaa? I always thought it was weird when they referred to him as MY GOOD FRIEND PAUL SULLIVAN. Do you have more?
