Journeymen of tomorrow: Cubs minor league recap (6.23.16)

In Minor Leagues by dmick8927 Comments

I’m short on time today so this will be quick.

Nashville Sounds 2 @ Iowa Cubs 3

Jeimer Candelario: 2-4, double

Candelario is off to a really good start in AAA. He could provide the Cubs some additional infield flexibility down the stretch.

David Freitas: 2-2, double, walk, RBI, run scored

Freitas is a 27 year old catcher who hit really well in AA and is off to a solid start in AAA. It doesn’t sound like Miguel Montero will be needing a DL stint, but Freitas is a possible replacement on the roster. I think Joe would stick with 2 catchers at that point and use David Ross as the primary catcher and Willson Contreras a couple times per turn through the rotation.

Matt Murton, Mark Lagunis, Dan Vogelbach and Munenori Kawasaki each had hits. Zagunis also walked.

Jake Buchanan: 6 IP, 3 H, R, 4 BB 7 K

Buchanan improved to 6-4, but has allowed quite a few runs.

Eugene Emeralds 8 @ Hillsboro Hops 1

The Emeralds easily won this one, but their pitching staff combined for 7 walks and 3 strikeouts, which was the opposite of what their offense did. The offense had 13 hits though while the pitching staff allowed only 5.

DSL Pirates 3 @ DSL Cubs1 4

DSL Cubs2 8 @ DSL Mariners1 6

  • Aramis Ademan: 1-2, 2 walks, 2 runs scored, strikeout
  • Fidel Mejia: 2-4, double, RBI, walk, run scored, strikeout
  • Miguel Amaya: 2-5, double, 2 RBI, run scored
  • Carlos Ocampo: 5 innings pitched, 4 hits, run, walk, 5 strikeouts
  • Andres Bonalde: 3.2 innings, 7 hits, 5 runs (4 earned), walk, 2 strikeouts, home run allowed

AZL Cubs 5 @ AZL Diamondbacks 4

The Cubs did a good job of spreading their 8 hits around. Only Rafael Mejia (3B) had more than one. He was 2-4 with a double, run scored and a strikeout. Kevin Zamudio (DH) and Michael Cruz (C) also doubled. Zamudio was 1-4 while Cruz was 1-3 with a hit by pitch.

Jose Albertos was rather dominating in his first start. He threw 4 innings, allowed only a hit and no runs. He walked just one and struckout 7. He clearly has not learned The Cubs Way for pitching prospects. Tanner Griggs threw 1.2 innings, allowed 4 hits and 4 runs. He walked a batter and struckout one.

I can’t stop thinking about the jabroni next to me at the trough at Wrigley Field last week who was pissing hands-free while texting with two hands up in front of his face. I mean, wtf

I read an article this morning that said that Montero is pretty much fine, La Stella will be coming off the DL soon and that Dexter will be 100% as soon as he’s ready to come off the DL. No mention of Soler. I’m not sure we should count on his availability at the deadline at this point. Not that I think he was a huge centerpiece of any trade or anything, but who knows when he’ll be back?

    dmick89,

Some of Montero’s comments yesterday made me think he might have asked for a trade, or expects to be traded. At minimum, he knows Contreras in the number one catcher starting pretty much now.

With LaStella and Fowler coming back, there really isn’t a place for him.

    SK,

How long ago was that. I think the last time I was at Wrigley was probably 3 years ago now. I can’t even remember. It was probably before my son was born actually so more like 6 years.

    josh,

Last year? The Ricketts made a big deal about toilet upgrades, and IIRC they weren’t ready for opening day and it caused much consternation and possible pants-pissing.

    berselius,

That explains a lot. It probably also explains Clayton Richards ineffectiveness—he wasn’t inducing those easier to field outs. I think his sinker is broken.

    SK,

Think of all the pee vapor in that room.

Your skin is already colonized by thousands of kinds of bacteria that keep each other in check. Your phone is not clean by default, exposure to pee vapor or not.

On the other hand, the trough eliminates almost all splash-back spray from the piss coming out at about 30mph (I am guessing) compared to urinals which prevents the ammonia and other stuff from disintegrating your shoes and clothes.

This realization is why I prefer to piss in the woods and there is a no standing rule in my own bathroom.

I got that same impression. I felt a little bad for Montero. That business side of the game has to suck for the players at times.

He came out of yesterday’s game with back stiffness, but said it wasn’t a big deal and probably wouldn’t have come out if the weren’t down by 7 runs.

I think the fact that it’s a travel day and that there’s a lefty on the mound factored into the decision to give him a breather, as well.

    dmick89,

that’s kind of surprising. montero has said a couple of times that he is ready to move on to a mentorship/coaching role. maybe it was just the BS that every player spouts to come off as a non-asshole but he seemed to be reasonably sincere about it.
